Christopher Columbus's claim to fame is that he was the first European to reach the continents of the Western Hemisphere. It should be noted, however, that he did not "discover" these continents since many millions of indigenous peoples had been living there for thousands of years. Additionally, he was not event the first European to reach the shores as the Vikings had actually made it to Newfoundland in Canada centuries before 1492.
