Why?
The reason for this is when you have quotation marks, you must put the puncuation inside the quotes.
How should the passage be written?
The passage should be written like this:
"Did you finish your homework?" Forrest asked.
"I have to write a summary of the book after I finish it," Jeff answered.
"I will leave you to it,"said Forrest. "By the way, its an exciting story," he added.
Instead of.....
"Happy Birthday, Rachel"! Lily cried.
its...
"Happy Birthday, Rachel!" Lily cried.
Instead of.....
Rachel replied sadly "Its been a horrible birthday".
its.......
Rachel replied sadly, "Its been a horrible birthday."
Instead of.....
"Why, Rachel? Its not supposed to be, right"? Lily said, suprised.
