Let's say we have the following figure.
To find the sum area, we just have to sum all the values/variables for each area.
[tex]A=x^2+x+x+x+1+1[/tex]Then, we reduce like terms.
[tex]A=x^2+3x+2[/tex]That way we would have the area of the figure using sums.
On the other hand, we can use products to find the area, to do it, we have to use an expression for the base, and an expression for the height, as the image below shows.
The red part shows the base and height we have to multiply.
