HOW TEACHING CHANGED MY LIFE
16th of February 2006 was the day I arrived at Potisk.um (one of the cities in Yobe State, Ni. geria).
After three weeks in orientation camp with at least 1,200 other graduates, I was assigned to Government Day Senior Secondary School (GDSS) to teach Economics. On my first day in school, as soon as I entered the class, my students, about 75 of them, all dressed up in brown shorts and shirts that were once white, stood up and greeted.
“This will be one year of educational adventure,” I thought. I carried out a well-reh.earsed self-introduction, after which I asked for their names. Silence.
About 60 seconds passed, then someone said something from the back of the class. Then the first student to my left gave his name, then the next, and so on. Long story short, it was at this point that I realized that the students could neither speak nor understand English.
To address this, I got permission from management to commence pro bono after-school English lessons. We started from the basics. As for my primary assignment in Economics, I was advised by management to "flow along". So, I enlisted the help of a Ha.usa-speaking Youth Corps member. We rearranged our timetables so that she could interpret for me during my sessions without missing hers.
One year went by quickly, and my assignment ended. I left GDSS uncertain about the future of the English lessons. Ten years later, I ran into the student who somehow knew it was time for the class to introduce themselves and who had instructed them to do so.
As we caught up, Abdul stated that there was a lot of pressure to revamp the English curriculum of the school after I left. Thankfully, the school yielded. In addition, they let the after-school program continue. “I am still an English student,” He said. “And because you helped us, I decided to study English at the university. I now teach the subject in a secondary school." He said. Tears of joy welled up in my eyes.
Based on my successes in Potisk.um, I returned to tutoring in 2020. Then I discovered lots of information. It made me think about how much more we could have done if I had the experience I had now then. Today, I am as determined as ever to get certified, and that is because, as my friends there are more who will become empowered to live their best lives. The meeting with the students changed my life.
