In 1980, Brezhnev sent in Soviet troops to assist the communist government in Afghanistan which was threatened by rebels. The Soviets fought a war in Afghanistan from then until they departed in 1989 after facing heavy casualties and damage from the Afghan rebels, most notably the Mujahideen.
