In 1852, Britain gave the colonists self-rule. Sheep husbandry and the finding of gold in 1862 brought prosperity to the area. New Zealand was the first country to grant women the right to vote in 1893. It became a Dominion, or completely autonomous country within the British Empire, in 1907.
