Realism was from the period of 1848 to 1900 while Romanticism was from 1780 to 1850 with both periods on the artistic world and the literary world.

Now, the realists Realists rejected Romanticism, which had dominated French literature and art since from the period listed above. This is because realism revolted against the exotic subject matter and the exaggerated emotionalism and drama associated with the Romanticism movement. This is because realism wanted to portray real and typical contemporary people and situations with truth and accuracy, and not avoiding unpleasant or sordid aspects of life.
