Why did cotton replace tobacco as the main crop in the South? Cotton could be grown all over the South, whereas tobacco was grown only in some areas. Cotton required less land than tobacco did. Cotton had a lower human cost than tobacco did. Cotton became faster to clean with the cotton gin.
Growing more cotton meant an increased demand for slaves. Slaves in the Upper South became incredibly more valuable as commodities because of this demand for them in the Deep South.
