In literature, how does a sense of uncertainty help create an atmosphere of fear?

Sagot :

In literature, a sense of uncertainty helps create a atmosphere of fear because,it makes an intense realm for people who are experiencing fear or the readers who are being captivated with that fear. It can create anxiety because you never know what can happen next, you'll feel worried or nervous of the events that may lie ahead. For example, as stated on "created suspense and atmosphere","..suspense is all about anticipation and escalating the tension, to keep tightening the screw, to bring the whole story to the boil for the climax." So, with these things you hit something internally, mentally which triggers this fear, not knowing what something is, not knowing what's around the corner, not knowing what may follow you, is why uncertainty makes an atmosphere of fear.

In the short story "where is here?", a mysterious man appears to be the previous childhood tenant wanders around the house. The man is unknown, which is gives a creepy sense. When a human doesn't know whats next or around each corner, suspense begins to arise. Suspense always ties with uncertainty. When a person is uncertain they begin to feel the sense of fear. Fear is everywhere and always begins because the person doesn't know, they are unsure. If you know whats going to happen next in a scary movie, would you still be scared? In the story on page 69, the father spots the strange man observing the house. The family doesn't know who the man is and the readers fear the man could harm the family. Since, the readers were uncertain of the the man, they automatically feared him.

In the poem "beware:do not read this poem", Ishmael Reed gives the reader a sense of uncertainly. Where the reader is wondering and questioned about where did the woman ended up when she disappeared into a mirror? Why does everyone who buys that house lose a loved one? It captures you into the poem leaving you questioned wanting to know what happened and what happens next. In the poem it states "...into her house, but she was too swift for them. She disappeared into a mirror...". That example shows how it could leave the readers questioned and uncertain.

hope this helps you.
