At the start of the school year, you learned about energy transfer in an ecosystem. As the energy is transferred from one organism to another, the amount of energy decreases. Why does the amount of energy decrease if energy can not be created or destroyed?
About 90 per cent of energy may be lost as heat (released during respiration), through movement, or in materials that the consumer does not digest. The energy stored in undigested materials can be transferred to decomposers.
