In 1898, prior to the Spanish American war, The Teller Amendment was passed. This amendment prevented the annexation of Cuba by United States forces, and placed a condition on the United States' military presence in Cuba. Therefore, the Teller Amendment would be violates if the US were to annex Cuba following a conflict.
