What does the area under the curve on a velocity versus time graph represents

The area under the velocity/time graph ... between two points in time ... is the distance covered during that time.

Funny thing ... if the velocity drops below zero (usually the x-axis) during that time, then the area isn't 'under' the graph.  It's still the area between the graph and the zero-axis, but it counts as 'negative area', and it subtracts from the total distance.
