Floridian starch is the energy storage material for the red algae. Red algae are called Rhodophyta and are the oldest group of algae that are eukaryotes. They constitute about 6000 species that are predominantly found in the marine ecosystem.
They store their energy in the form of floridian starch which has structural similarities with the starch granules of higher plants but they do not contain amylose as higher plants do.
The building block of floridian starch is UDP- glucose which is primarily joined by α(1-4) glycosidic linkage but sometimes become branched by forming α(1-6) glycosidic linkage. So its structure is similar to amylopectin of higher plants.
